Principal's Message

This will be our last newsletter for 2023 and what a year it has been. This time last year we were drowning in temporary fencing and beige landscapes and wondering whether we would really be set up in time for Term 1. The new buildings and grounds have made an enormous difference to how we teach, learn and play together and the most noticeable shift has been a return of the community that we loved so much pre-covid.

We feel fortunate to be fully staffed for 2024 with a stellar line-up of educators and support staff. Unfortunately, we were unable to find a music teacher with Italian language to take over the reins as Sarah goes on a global adventure. Last week we hired Mastaneh Nazarian to fill the music role three days a week, which means we also get to hang on to the much loved Bryce Turcato one day a week - winning all round! Mastaneh studied and lectured in music for many years before returning to complete her Masters in Education this year. She joins us as a graduate teacher in 2024 and whilst she doesn’t speak Italian, she is bilingual, speaking English and Farsi, and we will incorporate the Italian language through our talented Language Assistants. We have also employed Nick Green as an additional Education Support Staff member. Nick is well known to us as he completed his ES placement here at FPS and we are thrilled to have him join the team in an ongoing capacity.

At the end of this year we say farewell to a number of families and we wish them all the very best in their new schools, cities and states; Finlay Abang, Eric and Bonnie Ballantyne, Gladys Chan, Madison Huynh, Vivien Jarvis, Asher and Xavier Teo, Vianna Vaziri, Thomas and Phi Vu, and Margot Walshe. Please always feel welcome to drop in if you are visiting, and let your schools know that they can always contact us if they need anything. We will also farewell our graduating Year 6 students and we wish them all the very best. I will speak more to them about this important milestone at their graduation ceremony.

Thank you for your ongoing support across the year. As we welcomed our new staff and Foundation families for 2024, we heard so many stories of people saying that they just keep hearing from FPS families and staff in the community about how great our school is and how thrilled they were to be joining our community. We couldn’t agree more and we wanted to acknowledge your contribution to the growing success of Footscray Primary School. Next year, we have our largest intake of Foundation students for many years, with 65 new students joining our community.

We also couldn’t do any of this without the incredible team of educators we have here at FPS. Our teachers, leaders and support staff are an absolute joy to work with and I am regularly approached by my Principal colleagues at our network meetings hosted here at FPS and told that our staff always seem to have a bounce in their step and a smile on their face. Thank you FPS staff for your dedication, your outstanding practice, bouncy steps, and smiling faces. We love you!

Thank you to each and every one of our FPS young people for their efforts, resilience, creativity, inspiration, kindness, and humour. I often come into my office to find hilarious notes and letters, hand-crafted gifts, surveys, petitions, and requests for meetings or playdates. Our students care about the world and those around them and they see their place in making a difference. Working in education is the most rewarding job and it is so wonderful watching these curious little inquirers as they shape their future paths.

Thank you everyone, have a fabulous summer break!!

Staff Welcomes and Farewells

In 2024, we will welcome Sharon Jones (Business Manager), Nick Green (ES), Ida (Foundation Italian), Anna (Italian Art), Mastaneh (Music), Rachel (Year 3 Italian), and Sarah (Year 3 Italian). Laura, our Italian Language Assistant from CoAsIt, will now be an ongoing member of the FPS team.

At the end of 2023, we will thank and farewell Dan and Calum from the teaching team, Federica (CoAsIt), Val (Office support), Annette (ES), Jenelle (Art), Kylie and Suzi who will remain as CRTs and language support, and Rowena. Bec and Katie will both return very briefly in 2024 before taking their family leave and we wish Sarah all the best on her overseas adventure in 2023. I would like to give a special thanks to Rowena, our Business Manager. Rowena’s work is not always work that is seen and her commitment to her role and our school is outstanding. I lean on Rowena daily for advice, collaborative problem solving and support, both personally and professionally. The partnership between the Principal and the Business Manager is critical to the successful operation of a school and it is been an absolute pleasure to work alongside Rowena for the past 4 years since I started here in 2020. Thank you, Rowena, you will be greatly missed and we hope you enjoy your next adventure!

End of Year Assembly

We have our final assembly of the year next Friday, December 15. We will start early at 2:45pm to ensure we have time for our drumming performance. We have also invited back some former long-standing employees, Virginia, Janine, and Hanh. Virginia and Janine have completed their long service leave and have made the decision to retire and Hanh has permanently moved to Western English Language School. We wanted to recognise their service to Footscray Primary School with a proper farewell and we invite you all to join us.

2023 Annual Implementation Plan Reflections

Continuing on from the last newsletter, I share below some more 2023 reflections and achievements.

One important component of Caroline’s leadership role is to foster productive partnerships within the community, the wider educational sector and within the Footscray Learning Precinct. This year, we have had a number of partnerships established or strengthened with multiple cross campus opportunities for our students to connect with older students at Footscray High School. We have been active members of the precinct Early Childhood (EC) Network where we share practice with our EC educators and strengthen transition pathways from kinder to school. Caroline has also established an innovative partnership with VU to have pre-service teachers conduct an aspect of their literacy learning on site here at FPS. This allows the pre-service teachers to see the theory in action through observing our teachers as they deliver excellence in literacy learning in their classrooms.

We have continued to strengthen our practices through collaborative partnerships with the Bilingual Schools Network. We have attended and hosted a number of professional learning experiences in plurilingualism and Content Learning in Language (CLIL) practices, and we send at least 2 teachers (English and Italian) to participate in each term’s Bilingual School’s Teacher Network. As a member of the Bilingual School’s Principal Network Executive, I have been privileged to work with my colleagues on designing a Vision for Bilingual Education, supported by an elaboration written by Dr Ruth Fielding. The vision sets out long term system goals for pathways and partnerships, teaching and learning, and leadership and governance. We are proud to have formed a strong partnerships with the Department of Education, where our expertise in bilingual education has been valued and as a result, our Executive Team meet termly with the Deputy Secretary to work through our Vision for Bilingual Education. Our bilingual program continues to go from strength to strength as it expands into Year 4 in 2024. Jackie has done extraordinary work developing curriculum, assessment and resources to ensure we have a rich, evidence-based approach to bilingual education.

Step-Up Day

Next Tuesday 12th December is the Footscray PS 2024 Step Up Day. On this day, all students will meet in their 2024 classrooms, with their 2024 teacher/s and classmates. It is important for all students to attend on this day so that all our students feel prepared and ready for their new class next year. The transition session will take place from 9.15 - 10.45am and our new Foundation students will attend from 9:30 -10:30am.

Our Year 6 students will not be onsite as all Victorian government secondary schools have their own orientation day on the same day. We wish our graduating students all the best as they spend time in their new schools.
We are pleased to share that all of our new classroom teachers will be available to attend on that day, as well as new students so they too can spend time getting to know their teachers and classmates.

Across this week, we have been making time with students who experience additional anxiety around periods of transition to help support them with upcoming changes. We have provided a simple social story about transition and on a needs basis have informed a small number of children who their peers or teachers are to minimise unnecessary anxiety.

Foundation transition

On Tuesday we ran our final 2024 Foundation transition session for families. While our FPS training wheels were strapped onto the little people downstairs in the Palazzo, their adults experienced an immersive Italian bilingual learning experience with our Bilingual Learning Specialist, Jackie, and an immersive inquiry learning experience with our Partnerships and Inquiry Learning Specialist, Caroline. The session concluded with diving into the Footscray PS Learning Model (below) and how this framework blends the Victorian Curriculum and inquiry learning into our model of Launch, Explore, Summarise, Review.

Next Tuesday our 2024 Foundation students will be joining the rest of our school on their Step Up day. All students, including Foundation students, will meet their 2024 teachers and classmates in their 2024 classrooms.

FPS's Got Talent!

On Friday 24th November FPS hosted our ‘FPS’s Got Talent Finale’. There was a dazzling array of talents and skills on display from comedy skits to instrumental to singing and dancing. It was wonderful to celebrate our finalists with a great performance opportunity, and our audience were very appreciative and supportive. Our finalists were Alena McCallum (FC), Grace Nguyen (1A), Alfreda Holzer-Vowles (2B), Gabriel McOmish (2B), Anika Tyler (3B), Elijah Goldsmith (3A), Chinh Duong Vuong (3B), Harriet Dyes (4B), Ana Ilibasic (4B), Clementine Woods (4B), Jarrah Breen (4C), Vivienne Pole (5/6C), Harriet Dunne (5/6C), Khai Nguyen (5/6B), Zeno Cittadini (5/6B) and Alex Read (5/6B).

Congratulations to our two overall winners, in the Junior section: Grace Nguyen and in the Senior Section: Jarrah Breen.

A big thank you to the Gr 6 Music Leaders, Chelsea Ta, Zach Burford and Alex Read, they created the posters to advertise the event, spent many of their break times judging the first-round auditions, created certificates, and helped run the Finale.

Thank you to the FPS community for your support!

School Council Update

Hi Everyone,

My name is Emma, and I am honoured to provide you with an insightful update on the recent activities of the FPS School Council. As an engaged member of the FPS community, my son currently attends grade 1, and the warmth and inclusivity of our school have made my experience truly delightful.
As we approach the end of the school year, our exceptional teachers are embarking on a busy period, filled with enriching activities such as camps, foundation transitions, parent-teacher conferences, graduations and the eagerly anticipated Color Run.
At our most recent school council meeting, we discussed a range of topics including:
• School Uniform
• Primary Years Programme (PYP)
• Drumming
• Technology
• Workforce Planning
• Capital Works and Buildings and Grounds Future Plans
• Recent Fundraising Activities
In expressing our gratitude, we took a moment to thank all council members for their unwavering commitment throughout the year. A special acknowledgment goes to Clare Green, Meredith Jones, and Tim Liston for their dedicated service on the council. Their contributions have been invaluable.
Looking ahead, the current council members will continue their tenure until the next meeting in February. This continuity ensures a seamless transition.
Thank you for your ongoing support, engagement, and commitment to the success of our FPS community.

Emma Cashen

Thank you, Lady Mohawk

An enormous thank you to FPS parent and local artist, Sally Walshe AKA Lady Mohawk, for spending so much time and energy making our Edwardian student toilets feel like you’ve walked into a real life picture story book about friendship and love and inclusion and happiness. We have included some photos that don’t even come close to the real thing! Thank you for bringing us a little of your magic, Sally.

Community Mosaic - The Story!

The very talented Meredith Jones, community mosaic extraordinaire, has written the Story of the Community Mosaic. What a beautiful piece of history the mosaic is, and we thank Meredith again for her work on the mosaic and for taking the time to document the journey. Meredith has published multiple copies of the story which will be available in the foyer for those interested and available for loan in the FPS library.

FPS Fund-raising Report

Over the course of 2023, the FPS Social Club has raised a grand total of $12,555.72 to be used for the benefit of the school.

Our February cake stall hosted by Foundation and Year 1 families raised $1,475.00. The Community Day in March to celebrate the 160th anniversary of FPS raised $4,235,91, which was allocated to the FPS Building Fund.

As previously communicated, the $107.30 raised from our Book Week Swap was donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation Donation.

Our September school disco pricing structure resulted in so many generous families willing to cover the cost of other students that we were left with a surplus of $1,092.77 after expenses. This surplus will be used to fully fund a movie night in 2024, among other events.

The Referendum Day barbeque and cake stall and the trivia night returned respective profits of $4,444.50 and $5,110.24. These funds were used towards 60 new netbooks and charging stations to be used across the senior school cohort. This is a fabulous and much needed addition to our technology requirements at the school.

The FPS Social Club would like to take this opportunity to thank the school community for your enthusiastic support in achieving the above.

Finally, a reminder about the Colour Run on Tuesday, 19th December. It’s recommended that the kids wear light or white colour t-shirts that can be stained and either goggles or sunglasses.
