Principal's Message

When we manage to find a quiet moment, Kathy and I have been enjoying looking through the Seesaw classrooms and commenting on the learning moments that have been shared on the platform. There are some classes where only a few parents and carers have signed up and we encourage you to download the Seesaw app and check out what’s been showcased for your child. We have a lot of learning to do around how to make use of Seesaw without taking time away from teaching and learning and this is a very long-term project. Later this term, you will be invited to our first student-led conferences and we are not expecting them to be perfect. This work is designed to build student agency and design opportunities in daily learning where our young people reflect on themselves as a learner, co-develop their goals and become self-driven, active players in their own learning. Over the years to come, we expect that these conferences will evolve with the students and we invite you to be positive and productive partners in this learning journey. As we approach the student-led conferences we will provide you with some prompts and sentence stems that you could use to help your child talk about their learning challenges, successes and goals. We are looking forward to progressing this work together.

On June 12, we have our annual Public Reporting Meeting from 3:45pm - 4:45pm and we would love to see you there. We will offer some nibbles and Chris Wilson will be hanging out in the Palazzo playground supervising your children so you can join in without distraction. During the Public Reporting Meeting, I will share updates on how our school is progressing and where we are heading next as we approach our next school review in Term 1, 2025.

We have noticed an increasing number of parents and carers riding their bikes or scooters in the school grounds. As part of our safety measures, we have a school-wide expectation that we walk our bikes and scooters when in the school grounds. To assist us in keeping everyone safe and modelling our school wide expected behaviour, could you please ensure you dismount your bike/scooter during school hours 8:50 - 3:40pm.

Thanks everyone.
Jen.

Curriculum day

Our final curriculum day for 2024 will take place on the first day of Term 3; Monday, July 15. We will be using this day to work in our staff lead groups to progress our work set out in the Annual Implementation Plan. We will also spend time reviewing our whole school data and sharing practices to support students working below the expected level.

Enrolments 2025

If you have a child starting Foundation in 2025, enrolments are now open and we ask that you please submit an application form now. You can email our office staff for a digital copy, download the Foundation parent pack via our website, or collect hard copy forms from the office. Submitting forms early allows us to plan our workforce early to ensure your child has the very best teacher for their first year of school.

Voluntary Contributions Update

Thank you to families who are continuing to make their parent/carer contributions. Every payment received makes a huge difference to our programs and offerings. Since we last reported the percentage of families that had contributed, every year level has seen an increase and we really appreciate it.

Foundation - 59%
Year 1/2 - 41%
Year 3/4 - 40%
Year 5/6 - 44%

We also saw a slight increase in other areas such as first aid, grounds, communication, and wellbeing and we encourage you to continue contributing to these funds so we can work towards improved offerings in these spaces.

Education / Science week

Next week is Education Week and the theme this year is Spotlight on STEM. We have absolutely loved watching our little scientists exploring big ideas and asking big questions through their weekly Science and Design classes. We often see their science learning and exploration spill out of the learning spaces and into the yard. To celebrate Education Week, Caitlin has designed a week of opt in activities that spotlight STEM and will take place at lunch and recess. We need all the help we can get so if you have your current working with children check and some spare time, please email footscray.ps@education.vic.gov.au and let us know. No special skills or talents required!!

Staffing Update - Welcome Kath

We are thrilled to welcome Kath Petheram to the Footscray Primary family as the newest member of our Education Support team. Kath will be supporting students in a number of classrooms across the school. Kath has recently relocated to Victoria with her family and comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience from education support roles as well as a career in policing. Be sure to say a big hello to Kath if you see her around the grounds before or after school!

Education Support Personnel Day!!

Next Thursday 16th May is Education Support Personnel Day. This is the day when the world celebrates the extraordinary work of our Education Support staff, and of course our wonderful Language Assistants.
You may know our wonderful ES as the adults who work closely with our young people who need some extra support in their academic or social and emotional learning (Carol, Joyce, Christine, Pina, Kate, Cristian, Nick G, Kath). This fabulous bunch have a strong belief in the growth of all our students, and they maintain high expectations of our young people's learning and wellbeing, all while absolutely bursting with limitless patience and care.
You may also know Sharon, our brilliant Business Manager, Robbie, our extremely hard-working cleaner, and Vinh, our friendly canteen operator. You will definitely know the staff who greet you with big smiles at the front office, or over the phone when they’ve called to tell you your child has fallen off the monkey bars and face planted on the tanbark (Nellie, Katrina G, Katrina F). These champions are the heart and soul of our school, and despite their big workloads and constant interruptions from phone calls, grazed knees and that pesky leadership team, their positivity remains constant.
You may also know our fabulous Language Assistants who work in our Italian classrooms, helping teachers and students with language learning (Laura, Jessica, Claudia). They play an enormous role in the development of our bilingual program through designing and creating resources, supporting our young Italian learners with language, and providing the occasional arm rub and comfort when it gets a bit tricky.
Here at school we will be celebrating these superstars in many ways, and we would love for our wonderful Footscray PS community to share in these celebrations and express your gratitude in any way that you and your children can!

School Policies

Did you know that all current Footscray Primary School policies can be found on our website? School policies are a helpful communication tool that provide information and guidance regarding many elements of school operations. Click this link to find our current school policies, or visit www.footscrayps.vic.edu.au, click the ‘About’ button and select ‘Policies’.

Mobile Phones in Schools

This is a friendly reminder that all students bringing a mobile phone to school must sign this in at the school office each day. This is in line with mobile phone policy and guidance introduced by the Victorian Government in 2020. Students are not to store mobile phones or other devices in their bags and are not to use these devices across the day. Any contact you need to make with your child across the school day can be directed through our friendly administration team by calling 9687 1910. Once mobile phones are presented at the office, these are stored securely.

Attendance - Every Day Counts

Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind.
We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school.
There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.
Attendance patterns are established early – a child regularly missing days in kindergarten or in the early years of school will often continue to miss classes in the later years, and receive lower test scores than their classmates.
It’s vital that students go to school every day – even in the early years of primary school.
In Victoria school is compulsory for children and young people aged 6 -17 years.
If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.
