Message from the Principal - Reconciliation Week

Hello FPS families,

In the midst of this lockdown, I would like to draw us back to National Reconciliation Week which is taking place from May 27 – June 3. Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2021 is More than a word, Reconciliation takes action. There is a focus on moving from safe to brave to advance reconciliation beyond words and knowledge to action. Unfortunately, our Wear it Yellow day was unable to occur due to current restrictions and we hope to reschedule this at a time when we are back together.

For those of you who are wondering how you can take your next active step, you can get inspired by this list of 20 Action for Reconciliation in 2021.

Some good news to lighten up your lockdown!

A short while ago we were informed that our grant application to the Regional Arts Victoria Creative Workers in Schools program was successful. We are so excited about this project!! Our creative worker is Russell Goldsmith and he has a written an introduction below.

My name is Russell, and I'm very excited to have commenced a six-month Artist-In-Residence role with FPS.

We have been extremely lucky to have been included in Regional Arts Victoria's "Creative Workers In Schools" program. Over the next 2 terms, lots of different aspects of the program will be unveiled, and we hope to draw in students, teachers and family from throughout the school to participate.

At the centre of the project is establishing Footscray Primary School's very own recording and podcast studio on campus, and the creation of a number of student-led productions that will be widely distributed within the FPS community.

I am a sound designer, audio engineer and producer with a background in theatre, live music, radio, film and installation art, and more recently, podcasting. Since Covid hit, and the live performance part of my practice has stopped, I've produced a number of radio plays, audiobooks, music projects and podcasts, including one focussed on the storytelling and creative writing of primary school aged kids. This is one of the things that we are hoping to replicate at Footscray Primary. As well as being a local artist, I am also the father of a student in Year 1 at the school.

Work is thoroughly underway on converting a space in the Greenwood building into a fully equipped recording facility, with more equipment and construction materials arriving every day. The students are busy brainstorming titles for their recording projects, creating artwork, and devising booking schedules and programs they want to make.

It is my hope that this facility comes to be a valuable asset for the school and for the wider community, and that in time the creative folk that are amongst us are drawn to bring their talents in to help us create more fun content that we can record. I look forward to sharing the amazing audio that comes out of the studio with you all in the coming months.

School Council News

This year we have a number of sub-committees that will support the work of School Council; Finance, Buildings and Grounds, Policy, and Inclusion. The conveners of these committees will be defining their 2021 goals in upcoming meetings in line with our school priorities. We will share these overviews and seek expressions of interest where needed. Across the year, we may need to form working parties to support the work of the school and school council. This will include large events such as the 160th year anniversary and art show, which we hope will not be impacted by COVID. Please keep an eye out for these opportunities and jump on board if you are able.

Annual School Photo Permissions

During the school year there are many occasions and events where staff may photograph, film or record students participating in school activities and events. We do this for many reasons such as celebrating student participation and achievement, showcasing particular learning programs, documenting a student’s learning journey, capturing moments on camps/excursions/sports events etc, communicating with our parents and school community in newsletters, the school Facebook page and class communication through apps such as Seesaw.

Footscray Primary School understands that parents and carers have the right to withhold permission for our school to use photographs, video or recordings of your child (apart from circumstances where the school is not required to seek consent – see our Photographing, Filming and Recording Students Policy). Follow the link here Photography, Filming & Recording Policy

We are still waiting for some families to complete the consent form, The students who need to complete the form should of received the note in their bag at the start of this week.

We are asking if these forms can be handed back to the office by Friday 11th June.

If you need a new copy please come by the office to pick one up.
