Issue 14

Principal's Message

It has been a long and challenging year, folks, but we have almost crossed the finish line and we are extraordinarily proud of our collective achievements. We are super appreciative of all the support we have been offered and the understanding you have all shown across the year as we navigated relentless changes to the school yard, classroom locations, and staffing changes and absences. We hope you all find time to do what makes you happy over the holidays and we look forward to seeing you all in the new year in our new buildings and grounds. I will be asking the staff to switch off from their work and re-energise, so please refrain from communicating with teachers until the start of the school year.

We have 67 Year Six students who will be moving into the important transition from primary to secondary school and we are so proud of each and every one of them. They have endured two years of disrupted schooling and a final year surrounded by construction and limited playspaces. They never complain, just take it in their stride and continue on living and learning. They are a resilient bunch and I have no doubt that they will take that resilience with them and draw on it as they tackle the many challenges that life will throw their way. Farewell and best of luck to the graduating class of 2022, we can’t wait to celebrate with you at your graduation next week.

School Council Update

Dear FPS community,

It is my pleasure to bring you our final School Council correspondence for this year. It was lovely to gather together and celebrate a huge year, as well as acknowledge the hard work of all members of our community.

Year 5/6 Market
It was so wonderful to have many of our community come together to support the 5/6 students with their market day. The students worked so hard to raise money for the Year 6 graduation and we are pleased to say that they raised $2300. This money not only covers the cost of the graduation bears, but is also able to offset some of the cost of the Big Day Out which is a huge achievement for all involved. Congratulations!

Social Club Trivia Night
We would also like to offer a massive congratulations to the FPS Social Club and all those involved in the organisation of the 2022 Trivia Night. The night was a huge success, and we raised over $3000 which exceeded expectations. Stay tuned for information on how this money will be utilised within the school. Well done, we can’t wait for a dance at the next one!

Canteen Tender
Vinh Bui has been successfully endorsed by School Council as the provider for our school canteen for 2023. We are currently seeking expressions of interest from the community to form a working party to work with our provider to provide School Council with an updated menu before each meeting so that we may continue to endorse menu items which align with healthy eating guidelines.

International Student Program
Our International Student Program was paused in 2020 but has been reintroduced this year. School council has approved to increase our maximum enrolment numbers of international students from 3 to 30. This means we can enrol up to 30 students from overseas and welcome them into our community.

Attitudes to School Survey
We have received our feedback from the attitudes to school survey from both parents and staff. The parent survey demonstrated a positive increase in various categories such as school connectedness, non-experiences of bullying and student motivation and support. The parent opinion of our school environment decreased; however, this was to be expected with the chaos of our capital works project! The staff opinion survey shows an upwards trend in all areas including school climate, professional learning, school leadership and teaching and learning.

Buildings and Grounds
We are thrilled to see some of the playgrounds coming together in the yard this week. As a result of some fundraising, we still have some money in our playground fund which we are reallocating to the painting and refurbishment of our theatrette building. We will of course keep our historic mural in place, but we look forward to giving the other walls a much-needed face lift!

It has been a mammoth effort from our whole community to navigate the complex nature of our capital works, and I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to all members of School Council and the wider community who have supported us throughout this challenging time. The end is in sight, and I for one cannot wait to swing on some monkey bars next year. As always, please get in touch with any of our School Council members if you have questions around upcoming projects or School Council business.

Step-up day Tuesday 13th December

Next Tuesday 13th December will be the step-up day for all of our students to meet their new 2023 class mates and teacher. We strongly encourage all students to arrive on time as the step-up session will start at 9.10am.

All students will meet their 2023 teacher at the basketball court and the new classes will walk to a space for their activities for the session. As our 2023 spaces are not quite ready classes will move to the available 2022 classrooms. Teachers of the 2023 year level teams have collaboratively designed social connection games to support students with building some relationships before the school year begins.

Like all significant changes, we are aware there will be some big feelings associated with the transition into a new class, with new classmates, a new teacher, and new learning spaces. There will be additional adults available to support those students who may need some support and reassurance throughout this session. Those students who we know may need some time to process these big changes have already met with their 2023 teacher and been informed of their friends who will join them in their new classes.

Students will bring home with them a booklet that includes their 2023 class name and location, teacher name, and names of all students in their class. The booklet includes a Holiday Image Challenge where students are encouraged to either take photos or draw pictures about themselves over the school holidays. These images will be brought to school in the first week of Term 1 as teachers and students learn more about each other for the year ahead.

See you soon

We have a number of families moving to new areas and leaving the FPS community at the end of the school year and we hope they all transition well to their next pathway and keep in touch! Good luck Edna, Nathan, Quinn, Chester, Harrison, Leon, Ace Kairos, Nayla, Dominic, Matilda, Odessa, Lea Maria, Alec, Simeon, Duy, Fleur, Sia and Mai.

We also have a number of staff moving on to new adventures next year and we wish them all the best. Thank you Miranda, Luca, Xuhi, Oanh, Angus, Giulia, and Ariane. We are so grateful for your commitment to our school and the young people you have supported and worked with across the year. All the best for wherever 2023 leads you and please make sure that FPS remains on your list of most visited places. We say see you soon to Steph, Caitlin, and Sarah T as they embark on study and travel and look forward to hearing all their stories, along with Jessie’s when she returns after Term 1.

We are sending lots of positive thoughts and best wishes to our lovely music teacher, Sarah Mildner, who is recovering from surgery after breaking her wrist quite badly whilst playing basketball. We will see Sarah back at FPS in the new year. Rest up, Sarah!

CO.AS.IT Italian Language Assistants 2023

We express our sincere gratitude yet again to CO.AS.IT who have confirmed that we will have two fully subsidised full time language assistants at Footscray Primary School next year. Generally, CO.AS.IT allocates new language assistants to schools each year commencing in March through a program connected with an Italian university. We are very fortunate that they have decided to place two of our much loved existing language assistants with us again and they will be commencing in February. We welcome back Federica Mancusi and Laura Bellieni to the team for 2023. We farewell Guilia Tamai who has worked with us in the program this year and has now completed her placement and gained employment in a secondary setting. All the best, Giulia!

MLTAV Annual Conference

Last Friday, our Bilingual Leader, Jackie Robertson, and our external language consultant, Elena Pirovano, presented a session at the Modern Language Teachers Association of Victoria’s Annual Conference. They presented to an engaged audience on the process they have undertaken to design and implement a strong approach to reading in a bilingual classroom. Our Italian team create texts strategically to support the approach, starting with specific syllables at a word level through to more complex texts that embed the familiar syllables within a narrative. As we approach our third year of the Italian bilingual program, it is timely to acknowledge the extraordinary work of the staff working within the current bilingual team. A huge amount of work has been invested into the curriculum and resource development and its positive impact is evident in the teacher practice, student engagement, and learning outcomes. Thanks team!

Planned Power Outage

As shared in a recent compass post, we will manage a planned power outage in the theatrette/hall all day on Wednesday next week, and across the school from 8am-1:30pm on Thursday. Our builders will use generators where safe to provide power to the Greenwood. The Canteen, Edwardian, and Bluestone will be without power which will impact on our phone system, email access, and PA/Bell system. Please be patient if you are trying to contact the school during these hours and thank you for your understanding. We will use compass to provide any necessary updates across the day. Please read the newsletter article further along for details of which foods will be available from the canteen.

Capital Works Update

Our capital works continue at a rapid pace. I had a walk through of the general learning building yesterday and was pleased to see most of the carpet laid, painting done, lights on, and cleaning commenced. Furniture is arriving next week and we will be spending time over the summer ensuring everything is ready to welcome our young people back on Day 1.

Landscaping works will continue over the summer break with a short pause for the festive season and the COLA is scheduled to be complete in the first few weeks of Term One.

Successful canteen provider!

Footscray PS School Council are very pleased to announce that the extremely popular and much loved Vinh Bui is the successful applicant for our new FPS canteen license agreement, commencing in January 2023.

Thank you to all those families who contributed their thoughts to our survey in Term 3. Your wishes guided our selection criteria for the Expression of Interest process. Vinh’s warm and welcoming canteen service, her wide variety of fresh homemade hot food, and a diverse range of multicultural food that incorporates dietary needs have clearly won over our school community.

Vinh is very excited for 2023, and has already had a tour of the new canteen that will commence operation in Term 1 next year. Vinh is also familiar with the new Victorian Government regulations for single-use plastics commencing 1st February 2023, and is currently working towards sustainable packaging for next year.

With our new facilities, it is the school council's intention to enhance our partnering relationship with Vinh to help her deliver the best service possible. As such, we will be looking for volunteers to join a Canteen working party in the new year. More details to come after the school holidays.

We hope you will join us in congratulating Vinh with this great news!

FPS Chess Championship for 2022!

After a hard-fought competition including over 20 students from Year 3 to 6, spanning several weeks, eight players emerged as contenders for the knock-out Championship of 2022. Victory or defeat was now determined not by matches but by every individual move!

There was drama, a little controversy, even an overnight adjournment; and there was exceptional spirit, respect and grit demonstrated throughout. It was a true celebration of the mind.

By the end we had our Champions for 2022 in Atticus (Gold Medal), Kai (Silver Medal), Moonstone (Bronze Medal) and Tom (Runner Up).

Alternative canteen menu on Thursday 15th December

Dear families

As shared with the community last week, our construction team have scheduled a power outage on Thursday 15th December from 8.30am – 1.30pm. The project team and builders are organising generators for some parts of the school, however the canteen will have no power supply for the morning.

As a result, Vinh will provide an alternative cold food menu on this day. The following food can be ordered only:

-Rice paper rolls

-Sandwiches

-Vietnamese baguettes

If hot food is ordered accidentally students will receive one of the above menu options.

Thank you for your understanding.
